Since it’s the beginning of the last quarter of 2026, we have a new episode of Authortalk. Allow me to introduce Karyne Norton!

Karyne Norton hasn’t found the key to time travel, immortality, or infinite lives, so she’s taking a break from nursing and photography to focus on raising four human beings while writing epic fantasy and science fiction. The third book in her epic fantasy series, The Half-Light Chronicles, is expected to release spring 2027 and her YA sci-fi debut is coming to Kickstarter fall 2026. Her standalone time travel thriller, The Things We Can Change, is currently being adapted to a vertical drama by Y+X Entertainment for their LumiView platform.

When she’s not writing, she’s reading, which is why she’s also the host of the Finding Fantasy Reads podcast, where she reads a new short story every week from a variety of fantasy authors.

Karyne, thanks for being here. I was on your podcast earlier this year, and it was so much fun hearing my short story, “The Greatest Adventure” brought to life by a narrator.

I’m interested in learning about your YA sci-fi debut currently on Kickstarter. Where did you get the idea for this Kickstarter?

A couple years ago, I started throwing around the idea of a subscription service and what that would look like. I think book boxes are fun, but they’re expensive and, being the practical person that I am, I don’t usually use fancy soaps, teas, stickers, etc. In my mind, I wanted a book a month, and I wanted the books to match up with seasons or holidays.

What a fun idea!

The logistics of that idea were a nightmare, so as I pitched the idea to a couple friends, it slowly evolved into a multi-author Kickstarter with 3 volumes of 9 books. And because fairy tale retellings felt overdone (although I still love them), we settled on classic retellings with sci-fi twists.

I immediately knew I wanted to “fix” Wuthering Heights, and any time something needs to be fixed, time travel is an excellent option, so my classic and twist were pretty easy picks. It was a relief to finally show a happily ever after for at least some of the characters in that story.

How did you get in touch with your “inner villain” to write the antagonist in this book?

I was super excited to highlight Heathcliff as a villain instead of a romantic hero (although Catherine could have easily been one as well). Wuthering Heights is a clear tragedy, but it’s brought on by the characters and the inner battles they face. As much as they’re victims of their upbringings and what’s likely undiagnosed mental illnesses, it’s never sat well with me when the romance of Heathcliff and Catherine is idolized. Their relationship was ridiculously unhealthy, and I wanted to show it.

You’re right—and there’s so many unhealthy relationships glamorized in fiction, especially in YA.

I will say that Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Heathcliff in the BBC TV mini-series (the edited version🫣) nailed the uncaring side of Heathcliff, and I often pictured him while writing my antagonist’s scenes. It was important to me that my version of Heath was equally able to manipulate and throw out hurtful words at any given moment.

Despite my dislike for all of Hollywood’s efforts to romanticize the story over the years, it’s still one of my favorite classics, flaws and all. Mostly because of the flaws. The people feel eerily real.

You’ve been writing for a while. What are your go-to writing resources that could help aspiring authors?

I’m a huge fan of the Novel Marketing podcast run by Thomas Umstattd on https://www.authormedia.com. The information he gives out for free on there is like gold, and the courses he provides are even better. The reason I’m able to do all the things I’m doing as a writer are because of the business practices I learned from him. And because I’ve so carefully put all his recommendations into practice, I’m now teaching at his conference next January on how to run Kickstarters. Even if you’re just thinking about writing, learning how to start your business out strong will save you so much heartache later.

Authormedia does have a wealth of information available for new (and old) writers. But information isn’t all that’s needed when you’re writing–you need creativity, perseverance, and inspiration. What keeps you writing when inspiration vanishes?

One of my favorite quotes is from Peter DeVries who said “I write when I’m inspired, and I see to it that I’m inspired at nine o’clock every morning.” I don’t have the luxury of only writing when I’m inspired. I have to work while my kids are at school, otherwise I’ll have to stay up late or get up early and the older I get, the worse both of those options sound. Getting sound sleep each night is pretty inspiring!

I feel that 100%!

I’ve honestly never experienced what people refer to as writer’s block. For me, if I get stuck, it’s because something’s wrong with my story, so I set it aside for a bit until I have a fresh perspective. But that doesn’t mean I stop working. I work on a different project or my podcast or the monotonous business tasks that require different parts of my brain and give my creative well time to refill. Because one of my other favorite quotes is from Marshall Vandruff, when he said, “One reason that people have artist’s block is that they do not respect the law of dormancy in nature. Trees don’t produce fruit all year long, constantly. They have a point where they go dormant. And when you are in a dormant period creatively, if you can arrange your life to do the technical tasks that don’t take creativity, you are essentially preparing for the spring when it will all blossom again.”

I’ve found time with family, being in nature, and just living life help “refill the well” so I can get back to writing. And for some reason, I get some of my best ideas in the shower–it’s like a short, creative reset. What’s your favorite part of writing?

Revision has always been my favorite part of writing. I’d much rather fix something that’s already finished than have an unfinished draft hanging over my head. But I will say that over the last two years I’ve really grown to love dictating. Staring at a blank page and rewriting the same sentence over and over can be paralyzing and SLOW. With dictation, I get the words out—even though they’re imperfect—and then I have that finished draft I like working with so much faster.

Plus it gets me away from my desk because I can dictate while walking around my house or outside. Depending on the scene sometimes I have it in my head well enough to dictate while driving or doing laundry. So it’s a time saver in more ways than one, and it’s probably saving my wrists from major issues down the road.

I’ve been looking into dictating—it definitely seems like a timesaver! So let’s pivot to a couple silly questions: shoes or barefoot?

Are socks an option? Or slippers? In my mind, I’m picturing this question as indoors because in Arizona going out barefoot gets you burned. So socks or slippers!

Mountains or ocean?

Mountains any day. I like looking at the ocean, but sand drives me crazy. Sand and glitter.

Welcome to the first edition of Authortalk! I’ll be posting quarterly on small press and indie authors to showcase some of these fantastic lesser known writers.

Today, we’re focusing on author Sheri Yutzy! Her fascinating debut novel, The Seller of Secrets, releases on April 26. Here’s a little about the book.

Inspired by historical Florence, Italy, and based on legends of the Renaissance-era Medici family, The Seller of Secrets is a YA romantasy novel with a sensory and elemental–based magic system.

On the mystical island of Bardia, Bell Asbury’s sister is dying. A girl with an extraordinary but volatile gift for fusing magical elixirs, Bell was eleven when she accidentally struck her sister, Roza, with a magic that left her with an incurable illness. Six years later, she overhears her sister’s fiancé buying illicit ingredients for a brainwashing elixir. Alarmed and infuriated, Bell tries to end the engagement, but Roza’s fiancé is from a noble house, the sisters’ father is in debt, and their mother is eager to have a connection to a powerful family.

Desperate to find a cure for Roza’s disease and an antidote to the brainwashing elixir, Bell uncovers a tangled web of secrets that leads to a man called the Seller of Secrets and his plot to use the brainwashing elixir to force the entire island to obey him. Bell alone can create an antidote, but her experiments risk the sanity of those she loves.

Rian, an infuriatingly handsome spy, offers to help her defeat the Seller of Secrets. Although she knows Rian is a master of deception, Bell can’t stop herself from falling for him. But with so many things changing in her life, Bell doesn’t know who she can trust and who is working to control her gift.

Does that sound amazing? Sheri recently sat down with me to share more about the book, her writing, and what she loved best about the fascinating characters.

Hi Sheri! Thanks for spending some time with me. The Seller of Secrets was such a good book! I loved that it wasn’t a typical medieval setting and instead relied on a lush, coastal location/setting. So I have to ask, where did you get the idea for this book?

The setting of The Seller of Secrets was sparked by a trip I took to Florence, Italy, with my sister and now sister-in-law. The city was so magical and warm, I knew I had to write a story set there. It’s a YA Romantasy, and it’s woven with themes of power and responsibility, trust, and the nature of art, and Renaissance, Italy was the perfect backdrop for those elements. All the themes are things I’ve worked through in my own life. Exploring them through story helps me to process my own growth.

I’ve found that to be true as well. Was there anything you edited out of this book?

In early drafts, Rian was much more sinister and Bell less confident. Mary Weber did a developmental edit for me prior to finding my agent, and she showed me how strong Bell really was. My agent, Rebecca Lawrence, then helped me revise Rian until he was a better match for Bell!

Thank you so much for revising Rian—lol. (I’m not a fan of the dark “bad boy.”) Even though he was less sinister, he and the other characters kept me guessing whether or not they were good guys! You mentioned how Mary Weber helped you find Bell’s strength. Can you give us more insight into her?

Bell is fiercely honest, which may be my favorite thing about her. She’s one of the more innocent characters in the story, which was hard to write well and not overdo it, but I think her innocence works with her honesty. She’s not jaded. She’s hopeful. She believes the best about people. She’s one of my favorite characters but was actually hard to write.

Interesting. I usually find villains hard to write. How did you get in touch with your “inner villain” to write the antagonist in this book?

This antagonist deceived himself to justify controlling everyone around him. I can find that same temptation in myself when things don’t go my way and I think, It would be so much simpler if everyone did it the way I want. My MC also faces this, so in a way, she shows a positive version of the antagonist.

I’m still laughing over your “inside thought.” Did you ever consider any other titles for this manuscript?

It was originally The Secret Seller, but we switched it to The Seller of Secrets for clarity.

I can see why that might be confusing. This book is your debut novel. How long did you write before you became published?

I started writing my first novel when I was fourteen, so eighteen years ago! I’ve had short stories published over the last ten years, but this is my very first novel.

We’re glad you kept at it—writing can be a long but fun ride. Do you have a playlist/composer or use any visual aids while you’re writing (i.e., maps, Pinterest, magazine pictures, etc.)?

I listen to certain artists for a long time, different ones for each book. I’m working on a woodsy YA fantasy right now, and my soundtrack is Gregory Alan Isakov. I use Pinterest boards when working out the plot, and then later when fine tuning descriptions.

Pinterest is such a time-suck for me, but it really helps with visualization. As I mentioned, writing is a fun but hard profession. Aside from “keep writing,” what’s your best advice for aspiring writers?

Remember why you love doing this! The joy of creating a story you love truly is the best part.

I totally agree! What are your go-to writing resources that could help aspiring authors?

I highly recommend The Writer’s Sanctuary, run by Mary Weber and CJ Redwine. Also, any writing courses by Maggie Stiefvater–I’ve learned so much from her, and her courses are affordable and you can rewatch them.

Writing courses are an excellent way to learn more, especially if you can’t afford a writing conference. How do you begin your stories? Are you a plotter or a pantser?

A recovering Pantser. In early years, I pantsed because it was easy, not because the plotting stifled my creativity. Now that I’m writing under deadline, I have no time to mess around. 🙂

Speaking of time, how long does it take you to write a book—from preliminary plotting to final proofread?

Tough question, it changes with every book! I would estimate a year if I worked on the same book the whole time. I usually brainstorm and plot while working on a previous book, then focus on drafting the new one, then take a break and edit another story while the first one sits.

Wow, you’re a multitasker! I can’t divide my attention like that, so kudos to you! Do you do any other creative activities other than writing?

I love to knit, bake, and garden.

You’ll be able to get into your garden soon, now that the weather is warming up. Before we go, one silly question: shoes or barefoot?

Spark: Firestarting & Neurodiversity

Today as part of the StoryQuest Academy Clean Fiction Blog Tour, I wanted to share some of the inspiration behind The Firebrand Chronicles (includes Spark, Flare, & Burn).

I’m a firm believer God gives each of us a special gift that makes us unique and distinctive. This fact and the question “What if…?” inspired the beginning of my YA portal fantasy trilogy the Firebrand Chronicles.

What if God’s gifts were more dramatic than being a good teacher or a great speaker? Don’t get me wrong—those are valuable gifts (especially the speaking gift—I’m often unclear or awkward!) But what if God gave each person a highly visible gift, like firestarting or control of the weather? Could being able to control time be used for good or evil? How would individuals use these talents?

These questions were the basis for Spark, book one of the Firebrand Chronicles. I added another component to the main character due to my youngest daughter. Around the time I was writing Spark, she was diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive). This means rather than being hyperactive and loud, she was more often distracted and unfocused. I learned how ADHD affects children—lack of focus, impulsivity, and low self-esteem are often present. I couldn’t even imagine how an impulsive, distracted teen would handle firestarting, but I was interested in exploring it.

The YA fantasy landscape lacks characters with ADHD, especially girls. Percy Jackson’s ADHD and dyslexia are mentioned briefly in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief then explained away. In fact, few literary characters at all, male or female, are neurodiverse (this term covers ADHD, autism, Tourette’s, dyslexia, as well as a host of other disorders). Adhdaware.org.uk says 30%-40% of the population is neurodiverse, and the CDC says 11% of American children have ADHD. The YA fantasy genre doesn’t reflect this.

In response, I created Brenna James who struggles with ADHD while also being the Chosen One. I wanted my daughter and other neurodiverse kids to know they weren’t broken or damaged; they are creative, out-of-the-box thinkers who process the world differently. They can ride a griffin, battle the evil villain, and use their gift to save the world.

Because some YA reads more adult than young, my series is clean yet with lots of nail-biting action, some snark (because snark is a teen’s second language), and a touch of romance.

Here’s a little more about Spark:

Brenna James wants three things for her sixteenth birthday: to find her history notes before the test, to have her mother return from her business trip, and to stop creating fire with her bare hands.

Yeah, that’s so not happening. Unfortunately.

When Brenna learns her mother is missing in an alternate reality called Linneah, she travels through a portal to find her. Who knew portals even existed? But Brenna’s arrival in Linneah begins the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy, including a royal murder and the theft of Linneah’s most powerful relic: the Sacred Veil.

Hold up. Can everything just slow down for a sec?

Unwilling yet left with no other choice, Brenna and her new friend Baldwin pursue the thief into the dangerous woods of Silvastamen and beyond. Exactly what Brenna wanted to do for her sixteenth birthday. Exactly. When they spy an army marching toward Linneah, Brenna is horrified. Can she find the veil, save her mother, and warn Linneah in time?

And more importantly, why on earth doesn’t this alternity have Belgian waffles?

The Lore of Lament

Today, we welcome a guest post from Laura Zimmerman, author of Keen and the soon-to-be-released Lament! For those of you who think fantasy writers don’t do research, think again! Laura studied up on faerie folklore to write these wonderful tales of magic!

Thanks for being here, Laura! What can you tell us about faerie lore and how you wove it through the Banshee Song series?

The first book in the Banshee Song Series takes place in the Mortal Realm (that’s earth to us!) in a contemporary setting of high school. Since Caoine never visited either of the Faerie Realms in Keen, there was a lot of world building to be done for Lament. Luckily, I love to dream up fictional places!

In classic faerie lore, the Unseelie Realm is called the Winter Court or Winter Realm. Because of this, it is often described as mostly snow, very cold, and with an abundance of dead foliage. But I wasn’t satisfied with this type of setting for the Unseelie Realm within the world of Lament. I chose to introduce the idea of it still being quite wintry (think cold and snow!) but with color and plant life unlike any you’d find in your backyard. I had a blast creating beautiful and strange new plants and flowers, not only in their physical appearance, but in the way they might react to the world around them. (Yes, some plant life is definitely alive!)

Another aspect of faerie lore I enjoyed exploring were the faerie tricks and behaviors. I stick a bit closer to traditional fae legends when it comes to lying (something the fae cannot do,) healing (something the fae definitely can do,) and enchantments over humans (something Caoine learns to avoid quickly!) While the fae are an immortal people not easily killed, they also each inhabit a specific power that makes them different from one another. This is an addition I added not only because it goes well with the inhuman ways of the fae, but also to make faeries that much more mystical to Caoine as she discovers all the things about the other half of her life.

The creatures of Faerie added another way to explore this fictional land. Although there are a few traditional faerie creatures, there weren’t any that stood out to me that would lend themselves to the story. So, I created my own, of course! The Wild Gowher is a creature simply referred to, not one we get to meet in this trip to the Unseelie Realm (which is quite fortunate!) Although not described physically, this dangerous creature is basically a faerie goat. A creature we do get to meet in Lament is the scarlet reynard. The closest thing the Mortal Realm has is a fox, although this creature is far different. A scarlet reynard will rip its prey to shreds in a matter of minutes. It may not have a taste for fae blood, but it certainly enjoys humans, something Caoine learns all too quickly!

Happy Release Day!

This is a slightly surreal day for me. Spark was published in 2017, Flare in 2019, and Burn in 2020. But when I learned there would be a boxed set, with all three of my books plus some extra stories included, it was hard to imagine. Today that news is a reality as the Firebrand Chronicles boxed set releases!

As mentioned, in addition to Spark, Flare, and Burn, there are also four stories inside which I had such fun writing. Let me tell you a little more about them.

“The Peddler”–a story that takes place between Spark and Flare as Brenna travels to Linneah to celebrate the winter holiday Sonatalis. And of course, Baldwin’s ex Gari is there.

“The Midnight Unicorn”–this gives the reader an inside peak into shapeshifter Anna’s search of One Maiden Chasm for new Stones of the Spring (and an internal heart-search on her long-standing crush on Erhardt).

“Beyond the Greatest Adventure”–this takes place immediately after Burn. Aideen Siriol’s sword (now carried by Brenna) is no ordinary sword. The readers and Brenna learn her sword has a story and powers of its own.

“The Helix”–this story shares a glimpse into Brenna’s world three years after the conclusion in Burn. Did you know griffins mate for life? We finally get the full story on how Arvandus met his mate Astraya.

I did some quick math and realized the total of the extra stories is equal to a novella, so the set is like four books in one. 🙂 To celebrate in style, I arranged a #Firebrandbox challenge on Instagram and Facebook. Not Perfection, But Direction

Hi, welcome to Jilligan’s Island! Today we have author Tabitha Caplinger visiting! Her upcoming book, The Wolf Queen, not only has a beautiful cover but an intriguing story. What’s it about? Glad you asked!

Ylva was raised by wolves. That is the story her clan tells of their Wolf Queen. The truth is far more miraculous. Her Gift, bestowed by the Light, enables her to see deep inside the hearts of men. Prince Rohan considers the Light mere superstition and only believes in what he can see with his own eyes. But a great evil is infecting the Four Realms. The battle between the Light and the Darkness is no longer bound to human hearts, and words Ylva and Rohan thought were just legend are being whispered again. The dragon is rising.

Sounds amazing, right? I love learning about the “stories behind the stories.” You know, those things only the author can tell you? Tabitha has some interesting thoughts on choices, living chosen, and how it all ties together in The Wolf Queen.

If you hang around me or my social media at all, you will eventually hear or see the words, “You are powerful, chosen, loved, and never alone.” These are words I firmly believe. Why? Because I believe that each of us was created on purpose, for a purpose. I think that is why we like hero stories and Chosen One tropes. We want to be the hero. We want to be chosen. I believe we already are.

Maybe we aren’t chosen to save the whole world from an apocalypse, but we are chosen to speak life and light to the people around us. We all can live chosen.

That thread, living chosen, is the thread that ties all my books together. Whether it’s urban fantasy, paranormal romance, dystopian, or a little Viking-inspired fantasy coming soon…each and every story carries with it a piece of what it means to me to live like we are chosen for more.

The Wolf Queen focuses on the idea of choice. It’s ultimately a story about how the choices we make can guard our heart and keep it full of light or can let the darkness creep in and take hold.

Ylva was given the ability to see into human hearts and determine whether they were ruled by light or darkness. Looking into our own hearts isn’t so easy. We have to be intentional about opening our eyes to the choices we are making, big and small. We have to be careful to listen to the Light and walk in obedience. When we can’t see our hearts, He can.

To live chosen is to guard our hearts, to consider our choices with care. Why? Because the state of our hearts will determine the state of our lives. When we are full of light, we will reveal that light in our attitudes and actions. When we are full of darkness, it will taint our perspective and defeat us before we even get started in finding or living for our purpose.

Now, this isn’t about being perfect. I’m also a youth pastor and something I say all the time to students (and my pastor husband says it too) is “It’s not about perfection, but direction.” We will make bad choices. The next choice is what will matter most. Will the next choice take us back toward the light or will it pull us further toward the darkness?

I know, all the light and dark talk feels ominous. You could think of it differently if it helps. For you, it could be a choice between peace and anxiety. Or a choice between love and fear. Perhaps it’s a choice between gratitude and complaining, or insecurity and confidence. Depending on the circumstances, those choices could be easy or indescribably difficult. But they are choices we make that will lead our hearts and lives in a direction. Are the choices we are making leading us in the direction we want to go—the direction God wants us to go?

We were each created on purpose, for a purpose by a God who wants to help us discover and live that purpose out. It starts in the heart—with a heart yielded to Him and choosing to follow His leading.

In The Wolf Queen, there is a saying—a battle cry of sorts. “May the Light lead you, and the Darkness fear you.” That is my hope for you. Guard your heart. The Light will lead you. The Darkness will fear you.

I’ve been waffling on what to say here–it feels momentous! The blog tour is over, and Burn is in the wild. I have All. The. Feels. *blows nose inelegantly into a tissue*

Today is a day for celebrating!!!! Aside from the fact it’s the weekend, online schooling is almost over. Can I hear a heartfelt amen? *Cue marching band and confetti* (And yes, I can use as many exclamation marks as I want because I’m celebrating!!!)

All you homeschooling mom and dads, props to you. Online schooling is hard, especially when you’re thrown into the deep end like we were. Releasing a book, a series, is hard too and it never occurs in a vacuum. I’m so grateful to those who became a part of the “Firebrand team.” *voice wobbles and pulls out the tissue again* Sheesh.

My husband and my kids are my biggest supporters. This isn’t lip service. They read the books, give encouragement, and act as stand-ins when I have to stage fight scenes. (My kids think I’m weird, but they’re avid cosplayers so I see them walking around the house in wigs and black and white face paint. The apples haven’t fallen far from the tree. Lol!) Their support is huge because they’re the ones who suffer the most when the laundry doesn’t get done or I don’t cook because of deadlines or a scene has to be written–RIGHT NOW.

My supportive parents encouraged me to be creative and imaginative. Mom and Dad, thank you for letting me daydream and write and read stacks and stacks of library books until my eyes crossed. <3

When I pitched at Realm Makers in Villanova, PA (2016!), Michele Harper (and the entire L2L2 Publishing team) were so encouraging. At that point, I’d been out of the writing conference loop for almost ten years, had two children, and switched genres (from romance to joining the dark side of speculative fiction. Lol!). BTW, if you’ve never been to a writer’s conference, Realm Makers is one of the best out there–not just because of great classes and content, but also because the people are nice people. (You might think that’s a given. I’m speaking from experience–it’s not that way everywhere.)

Also, if you’ve beta read or critiqued the Firebrand Chronicles, blogged or posted on social media, left a book review, gushed about them to a friend, or stopped me on the street to say you liked the book or asked about the next one–THANK YOU. Knowing my stories gave you the chance to escape to Linneah with Brenna and Baldwin for a few hours is a huge honor.

It’s a bit bittersweet leaving them behind, but I hope BURN’s ending is everything you longed for.

As mentioned in L2L2 Publishing’s most recent post, the Firebrand Chronicles is being gathered into a beautiful boxset, complete with new short stories and other extras! I’ve had so much fun creating them and I’m eager to share them with you. It’s tentatively scheduled for a summer release — more information will be forthcoming!

Burn’s Release Day: Looking Back

I’d originally had another post for today– something about plotting vs. pantsing and how’d I’d used both for the Firebrand Chronicles, blah, blah, blah. 🙂

And it struck me that I didn’t want to talk about that much. For the past two weeks, I’ve been looking back and thinking about when the Firebrand Chronicles journey started. I mean, I’ve finished a trilogy, but a part of me is still a little befuddled how that happened!

Humor me and let’s look back five years ago. At the front of it, 2015 looked a lot like other years before. After querying agents, and stalking, er, I mean, submitting to publishers, I had nothing to show for it except a nice, growing stack of rejections. So I did the only thing left–I reevaluated.

It sounded like this. “Well, I have a good life–a husband who loves me, two great kids, and we live in a rural neighborhood with a loving church nearby. I guess I don’t need to be published.” And while all that was true, the need to write was still there. I couldn’t turn off the urge like a faucet, so I knew I’d still write if only to get the voices out of my head.

And that’s when things started to come together. I entered a contest that led to an award that led to a conference where I pitched Spark. (BTW, you should be entering contests! But that’s another post…) And here I am, five years later, with several anthologies containing my short stories and a finished trilogy. Phew!

Some might say it was my hard work paying off. While I’m certain hard work is part of it, it’s not ALL of it. Lots of writers work hard–we have to because the market is super-competitive. Part of it is about surrender, loosening a grip on a dream so Someone can shift it, manipulate it into something better. And part of it is also listening to that voice that tells you, this is what you’re put on earth to do, this is why you’re here.

I’m sure some people will read this and scrunch up their face, thinking, “Well, of course, she’d say that. She wrote and published a trilogy. What about me? What am I supposed to do?” I don’t know what your future holds. But I can give you three action items to improve your craft. I can’t promise these things will get you a contract or on the bestseller list, but I can promise they will help you be a better writer.

1) Finish the manuscript. Did you know 97% of people who write NEVER finish their manuscript? (That percentage stuns me every time.) You have to finish it to get it published, whether you go indie or traditional. Finish it so you can revise it, so it can be sent to an editor, or so you can move on to the next story. But keep working until you type “The End.”

2) Read. Read in your genre, outside your genre, anything and everything. You’ll learn what’s already been written, who did it well, and what’s trending. Knowing the published “landscape” is part of being a good writer.

3) Don’t give up. If you’re writing because you think it’s quick money, or because it’s easy, you can stop right now and take up underwater basket-weaving. It’s likely to make you more money and be easier than writing. But if you can’t give up writing, then keep going. Don’t listen to the toxic naysayers. Instead, surround yourself with supporters, encouragers, those who love you, and want you to do well. Find a critique group, and learn as much as you can about writing.

I hope these tips help. I’ve grown and learned so much in these last five years, and I’m moving forward, still as much in love with writing as ever before. My next project (a Snow White retelling) is already “finished” although the plot holes need to be plugged. 🙂 For right now, I’ll let it simmer and enjoy Burn‘s release-day celebration!!!

I’ve had so many people ask when Burn would be coming out. (Probably due to all the cliffhangers in Flare. Lol! #sorrynotsorry)
